Going Green: how to have a compost?

I am not super freaked about the environment...but I do figure there are little things I can do to help. How do I have a compost...not the kind where you buy a bunch of worms put them under your kitchen sink, but the kind where you can put all garbage (save from plasitcs, metals, and gles)?
