Is it ok to cut up a credit card then start paying it off and cancel it, do u need to send the card back?

i want to know cos i cut my cards uo toda, i still have the pieces, i have a capitol one and a virgin card. i wanted them cut so i really ant use them and will definatly pay them off, was that ok to do,will i need to post back the cards?
